The Legacy of Number 42: Jackie Robinson’s Symbol of Change

Jackie Robinson’s number 42 is one of the most important numbers in sports history. When Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s racial barrier in 1947, his number became a symbol of courage, perseverance, and equality.

  Why Was Number 42 Retired?

In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of Robinson’s debut, Major League Baseball (MLB) made an unprecedented decision, they retired number 42 across all teams. This meant that no player, from any team, could wear it again. It was the first and only time MLB retired a number league, showing how much Robinson’s impact went beyond baseball.
